Experiential Group Therapy in Chicago

Group Therapy in Chicago

Group therapy allows you to explore and work through your experiences with others, who have similar issues and experiences under the guidance of a trained counselor.

At Pneuma, we create a safe, constructive space for you to open up about your feelings and experiences, and build a community to support your journey.

Benefits of Group Therapy

Group therapy offers unique benefits, which make it an excellent addition to individual counseling or stand alone treatment.

These benefits include:

Realizing you are not alone: It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking you are the only one going through what you are, and that no one will be able to understand, or there is something especially wrong with you. But you are not alone. Connect with others who understand where you are coming from.

Building a mutual support network with others, who have had similar experiences: Having others who understand your struggles to support you can help keep you on track and motivated in your healing journey.

Exposure to differing perspectives: While you may have similar experiences and struggles, you are all different people with different perspectives. Hearing a variety of perspectives can help you reframe your thinking, and find solutions you might not have thought of before.

Improving interpersonal and communication skills: During group therapy, our counselor will work with you to improve your ability to communicate your feelings with others, listen to others, and connect in a healthy and productive way. These skills will help you improve your relationships, and ability to find support on your own.

Group Therapy for Sex and Porn
Addiction

Pneuma offers two phases of group therapy for men struggling with sex and porn addiction – one for men early in their recovery journey, and one to support men in the later stages of recovery.

Why Group Therapy?

Group therapy, in addition to individual therapy, has been recognized as a non-negotiable part of addiction recovery. Addiction revolves heavily around issues with openness, connection, and shame. In light of that, working in a group setting will be able to directly address these issues, as well as provide insights from other people who are struggling with the same thing in ways that individual therapy cannot.

Phase 1: Facing the Shadow groups

This is a 12-week group therapy for men struggling with sex and lust addiction and are early in their recovery. This group sets the groundwork for Recovery by establishing sobriety, stability, helping you understand addictive nature, and beginning to see how your life story has led to your addiction. The script uses the workbook Facing the Shadow.

Phase 2: Recovery Zone groups

This is an open and ongoing group for later stage advance recovery. This group is for men who have established a sense of stability with their addiction.  This group digs deep into each person’s past trauma to go beyond sobriety and establish true and lasting recovery. This group uses the workbooks Recovery Zone Volume 1 and Recovery Zone Volume 2.

Psychodrama Therapy

Psychodrama is a form of group therapy that uses role-playing, storytelling, and action to help you explore your thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. Instead of only talking about your struggles, you can step into them, safely express what’s been held inside, and discover new ways to heal.

Experiencing Psychodrama

Psychodrama is a type of group therapy that uses guided role-play and creative action to help people explore their feelings, past experiences, and relationships. In a session, you might act out a scene from your life, step into someone else’s shoes, or practice a new way of responding to a tough situation. You won’t be forced to perform or share anything you’re not ready for—everything is done in a safe, respectful space with support from the group and trained therapists. Many people find that psychodrama helps them better understand their emotions, heal old wounds, and feel more connected to themselves and others. It’s a powerful experience, but you’re never alone—you’ll be supported every step of the way.  Each session is guided by a trained psychodrama therapist and held in a confidential, welcoming space. You’ll take part in group activities, support others in their journeys, and have the opportunity to explore your own story in a powerful and creative way. Many participants find that psychodrama helps release deep emotional blocks, build confidence, and reduce anxiety.
