Pneuma Counseling Couple’s Therapy in Chicago
If you and your partner are feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to talk to each other anymore, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Pneuma Counseling offers couples counseling in Chicago, with in-person appointments at our Chicago office and telehealth services available throughout Illinois, using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of the most researched approaches for helping couples rebuild trust and connection.
Many of the couples we work with are navigating communication breakdowns, trust and betrayal, or the slow drift that happens when two people stop feeling like a team. Wherever you’re starting from, our therapists will help you understand what’s driving the disconnection and build a way back to each other.

Find Peace and Healing with our Couple’s Therapy in Chicago
Having a meaningful connection is necessary for survival. When your most important relationship is hurting, everything else is affected. Make an appointment with one of the couples counselors to help you both find intimacy and connection.
How Couples Counseling Helps
Most couples don’t come to counseling because they’ve stopped caring — they come because the same arguments keep happening, or because something has broken trust and they don’t know how to rebuild it. Couples counseling gives you a structured, supportive space to slow that pattern down.
Using an EFT approach, our therapists help you and your partner:
- Identify the negative cycle driving your conflict — the pattern underneath the arguments, not just the arguments themselvesÂ
- Communicate the needs and fears that are harder to say out loudÂ
- Rebuild emotional and physical intimacyÂ
- Repair trust after betrayal, if that’s part of your story — read more about how we approach betrayal traumaÂ
- Create new patterns of connection that hold up outside the therapy room
For couples who want a more immersive experience, we also offer the Hold Me Tight Weekend, a structured EFT-based couples retreat built on the same research-backed approach.

FAQs
Progress in couples counseling depends less on any single session and more on what happens between them. Showing up willing to be honest, even when it’s uncomfortable, and practicing what you discuss between sessions are two of the biggest factors in creating lasting change. Consistency matters more than perfection.
Yes. Couples therapy can be helpful whether you’re together, separated, or somewhere in between. For some couples, this season is about deciding whether to reconcile. For others, it’s about improving communication and co-parenting with less conflict. Your therapist will tailor the work to where you are in your relationship, not where you think you should be.
There’s no “too early” for couples counseling. Some couples come in during a crisis, such as an affair or a major breach of trust. Others come in because the connection has gradually faded and they want to rebuild it before it becomes more difficult to repair. Both are valid reasons to seek support.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is one of the most researched approaches to couples therapy and has been associated with meaningful, lasting improvement for many couples. However, outcomes depend on both partners’ willingness to engage in the process and the challenges they are working through. If a specific EFT success-rate statistic is included here, it should be supported by a published clinical study.
The term “5-5-5 rule” can refer to different communication exercises depending on the therapist or relationship expert. One common approach gives each partner five uninterrupted minutes to share their perspective, followed by time to discuss the issue and agree on one small next step together. While exercises like this can encourage healthier communication, they are not a substitute for working through deeper relationship concerns with a qualified therapist.
