Personal Statement

I grew up in rural southern Wisconsin as a Filipino American, transracial adoptee. Both of these are a few identities that have created the capacity in me to sit with the complex identities of my clients’ lives.  Living in a variety of urban areas, most recently Chicagoland, has deepened my curiosity and compassion for the infinite expanse of the human experience.

I have loved becoming a husband and a father. Here are other life experiences of meeting various people from walks of life that reflect the diverse clientele I work with:

  • I was a leader in my college years, heading up multiple organizations in diversity initiatives.

  • I started a non-profit organization guiding at-risk teenagers in social and emotional support.

  • I worked as an operations manager in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • I provided pastoral guidance.

  • I gained skills from Wisco’s dairyland professions (think cows, cheese and beer).

  • I have group therapy experience working with foster children and the adoptee constellation.

  • I assisted in the resettlement of refugees in the northern neighborhoods in Chicago.

  • I have provided housing in my home to men recovering from drug addiction.

I enjoy all things Packers and Brewers (sorry, Bear Fans), a good IPA or amber ale, biking up and down the Lakeshore Trail, thrifting and garage sales shopping, a good strategy board game, and a good conversation.

Approach to Therapy

As a psychodynamic therapist functioning within a trauma-informed framework, I describe myself as “following the comet” (you) in the path that you are living out and leading while always ready to offer support in any areas that you desire. I am continuously working to provide an accepting space to enable you–the expert of your life–to navigate and discover any obstacles in your life, helping you gain awareness of any hidden, unknown blindspots. I will attune to you, often inviting you to sit with and notice your life experiences through mindfulness and somatic techniques resulting in an organic way to discover the parts of yourself.

Life throws us curveballs. I help you to become aware of how you have handled them in the past and then help you to decide how you’d like to handle them going forward. We will collaborate and will develop a toolbox of resources to help you anticipate and accept whatever life throws at you.

If you’re new to therapy and feeling skeptical of therapy, or you’re a seasoned veteran looking for a different approach to your story, I am ready to meet you wherever you are in your journey.
